Growing Blueberries
About Blueberries
Blueberries have recently been touted for their health benefits. Studies have shown that blueberries are rich in antioxidant phytonutrients. These properties have the potential for suppressing certain cancer cell growth and slowing age-related decline in motor ability and memory. New varieties of blueberries make it possible for gardeners in many diverse climates to grow their own blueberries.
Container Planting Blueberries
Container planting is a great option when your native soil is extremely alkaline and not conducive to growing healthy blueberry plants.
- Obtain a large container (a half wine barrel, for instance) and plant your blueberry in it using an acid planting mix, such as that suited for azaleas and camellias, or using the planting mix recommended by Dave Wilson Nursery (see More About Blueberries on the Blueberry selection page).
- Be patient.
- Water and fertilize your plants for two to three years and then expect a crop of tasty berries!
- If you live in a climate zone with low chilling hours, opportunities abound. Try Misty, Sharpblue, Sunshine Blue or one of the other varieties listed on our Low Chill page.
